
It has the distinct metallic hammering noise of an engine ping, not like a backfire. It was from the one piston on that side because it wasn't a fast ping which I have heard many times on my old small block. What is head was a distinct pinging, not a backfire through the carb as well. Yeah, I inititially thought it was the intake lobe on that cylinder, but now after the fact I'm second guessing myself. But the latter is just a wild guess on my part. I believe that happens in a number of engines. I also suspect that the discoloration on the piston might merely be due to the airfuel mixture being off in that one cylinder. That's why I'm questioning your diagnosis, as well as your description of what you were actually hearing when the cam lobe quit on you. So I dunno how you could've even noticed any pinging. Re you sure that it was pinging that you were hearing? or was it backfires from the carburetor? With that exhaust valve gone, it must have been backfiring loud and repeatedly from the carb whenever you tried to step on the gas. I'm not saying that it cannot happen, but when it happened to me, the backfiring out of the carb was so loud, I don't think that I could've possibly have noticed any pinging even if it DID occur. I've never heard pinging due to an exhaust lobe being wasted on the cam.
